PRESENTATION: “Hidden In The Sweatshops: The Human Cost of Nike Athletic Gear” with Sophorn Yang

March 23 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Sophorn Yang is President of the Cambodian Alliance of Trade Unions (CATU) and United Nations Delegate to the Status for the Commission on Women. In 2016, Sophorn was instrumental to the successful living wage fight to raise the national minimum wage to $158 per month, a near doubling from two years prior. CATU represents Nike workers at several factories and the union is fighting for neutrality to organize hundreds of more Cambodian Nike workers in a dangerously anti-union climate.

The talk is free and open to the public. This event is hosted by the Labor Education Program of Michigan State University’s School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Co-sponsors include The Asian Studies Center, The Center for Gender in Global Context, James Madison College, Peace and Justice Studies, The Department of Sociology and the MSU Chapter of the United Students Against Sweatshops.
