NYU prof Scott Galloway, et al. analyzed 436 universities included in US News and World Report’s Top National College Rankings. with data from a variety of sources, including the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) maintained by the US Department of Education. Based on results, they plotted each university in one of four quadrants: Struggle, Perish, Thrive, and Survive. See results here.
