PERSPECTIVES: A Corporate-Style Approach to Selecting College/University Presidents

Two institutions–Purdue last year and Nova Southeastern this year–tabbed new presidents via a corporate-style promote-from-within approach. Proponents argue that the succession approach gives stakeholders real-time experiences with the incoming president. But while critics concede that it may offer a smoother transition path in some situations, it may not fit the circumstance when institutional change is needed.
