NEWS BRIEFS: At What Cost? University Honors Bestowed, Then Withdrawn

A standard practice it is — honoring donors with names on buildings and others with honorary degrees. Earlier this week, FutureU posted several articles about the aftermath of a university withdrawing its support for a named building. The example here is about withdrawing an honorary degree. Although the circumstances are different, perhaps the core issue is the same: You won’t have to withdraw if you stop naming/bestowing. 


University of Regina statement: “While the University recognizes that Turpel-Lafond has been a strong advocate for Indigenous rights and child welfare, her accomplishments are outweighed by the harm inflicted upon Indigenous academics, peoples, and communities when non-Indigenous people misrepresent their Indigenous ancestry.” Read more here.
