NEWS BRIEFS: U of Michigan Cancels Student Referendum on Middle East Situation

UM official: An email sent to the student body “constitutes an inappropriate use of the University’s email system and a significant violation of Standard Practice Guide,” and irreparably tainted the voting process on the two resolutions.” In response to the decision,more than 60 student organizations organized a protest outside the Michigan Union” to protest the “administration’s unjust cancellation of an ongoing student referendum on the University’s response to the genocide in Palestine,” stated a release by Students Allied for Freedom & Equality (SAFE).” Concerned about “the blatantly anti-democratic move and push back against the rising anti-Arab sentiment and Islamophobia on campus, heightened by the cancellation of the vote, University of Michigan students were taking part in a campus-wide vote on whether the University administration should condemn the ongoing genocide and divest the University endowment from companies that profit from and support Israeli apartheid.” Read more from Michigan Advance.
