PERSPECTIVES: Altered Focus Permeates Today’s Undergraduate Education

Mission displacement is nothing new. Over time, institutions founded to do X often morph into Y. Unfortunately, that has happened in undergraduate education with today’s overarching emphasis on job training. In this commentary published in Inside Higher Education, Steven Mintz, a history professor at UT Austin, draws on Larry Cuban’s work, contending that “our goal as educators should be to realize American education’s democratic promise—to ensure, to the best of our ability, that all our students receive an education that will help them realize their God-given potential.” Read his commentary here.
