FUTUREU FORUM with MICHAEL GAVIN: “The New White Nationalism in Politics and Higher Education”

COMING IN EARLY JUNE….

Michael Gavin

The New White Nationalism in Politics and Higher Education analyzes a new form of white nationalism that seeks to recruit mainstream citizens to achieve its goals.

This New White Nationalism sees higher education, which imparts fact-based knowledge and interrogates history, social structures, and power, often from antiracist and multicultural lenses, as a threat.

Michael H. Gavin reveals the tactics of The New White Nationalism. He provides a tool called The Nostalgia Spectrum to examine American racism. In the process, the author demonstrates that many scholars call a crisis in higher education a crisis of political and social imagination. Reimagining a socially just nation and leveraging higher education institutions that provide low-cost, accessible education to minorities as the first choice for middle-class America could have transformative effects on the country itself.

Dr. Michael Gavin is president of Delta College in Michigan. He is committed to the notion that community colleges can reshape society’s inequities through open-access education and teaching excellence. Dr. Gavin has a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Maryland in College Park.

His publications include Sports in the Aftermath of Tragedy: From Kennedy to Katrina (2012) and The New White Nationalism in Politics and Higher Education: The Nostalgia Spectrum (2021).

Earlier this year, he published a commentary (also posted on FutureU), “Silence Isn’t a Strategy: Academic Leaders Must Resist Assault on Higher Ed,” in Truthout.
