Last week, the U.S. Senate voted 74-24 to move the legislation to a final vote. That support comes largely from the major college “sports industry,” including schools and conferences that would benefit most from its passage, and Republican legislators. Opposed are Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), and members of the Black Congressional Caucus. Higher Ed Dive also reported that several college sports analysts oppose the bill, including  “Stewart Mandel, who spearheads college football coverage for The Athletic, pointed out that it does nothing to cap coaches’ salaries, a prime driver of athletic department budgets, while also allowing for plenty of spending on athletes even with the revenue-sharing cap.” Others (see yesterday’s post) say the bill reinforces the current have/have-not structure of major college sports, predominantly privileging the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference and its member schools, who are among the biggest spenders in college sports (e.g., Ohio State, Texas).
