While we’ll never know the answer to that question, we do have an answer from Amy Reid, director of the Freedom to Learn program at PEN America: “By using the carrot of funding to mask the stick of censorship, Kansas is not just discouraging universities from including material about race and gender in their courses, but taking away the opportunity for students to strengthen their critical thinking by engaging with new ideas.” Insider Higher Education also says, “The budget bill would also freeze tuition revenue, allow institutions to fire tenured faculty faster, and develop plans to eliminate a tenth of positions and expenses from universities’ leadership offices.” The Culture War against higher education is being waged in Kansas.
