NEWS BRIEFS: U.S. House Republicans to Expand Higher Education Targeting

The Republican-led U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee will expand hearings targeting higher education, reports Inside Higher Education. “For years, universities have stoked the flames of an ideology which goes by many names—anti-racism, anti-colonialism, critical race theory, DEI, intersectionality; the list goes on,” Representative Virginia Foxx, the North Carolina Republican who chairs the House education committee, declared at a December hearing on campus antisemitism. “This value system taught in universities is absolutely foreign to 99 percent of Americans.”

Having completed grilling sessions of multiple university presidents and chancellors, the Committee will now investigate practices at a select set of institutions: Barnard College, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Los Angeles. University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University. Nine of the twelve institutions are affiliated with the Ivy League (N=5) and Big Ten (N=4).  Read more here.
